‚SYNCHRO’ LOUNGE CHAIRS BY HERMAN MILLER, USA 1970s

The Synchro Lounge Chair was introduced in 1975 and remained in the Herman Miller collection for only a very short period (approximately 1974/75 to 1976). As a result, it is considerably rarer today than the iconic designs by Charles & Ray Eames or George Nelson.

What makes the Synchro particularly distinctive is its hydraulically synchronized reclining backrest (hence the name Synchro), the elegant chromed cantilever frame with its circular arm supports, and the cylindrical headrest, a design element echoed by the matching cylindrical ottoman.

Rather than being attributed to a single designer, the Synchro was created by Herman Miller’s Prototeam Design Team, an internal development group responsible for several innovative furniture designs during the 1970s.

Interestingly, despite its rarity, the Synchro never achieved the cult status of the Eames Lounge Chair. This is due less to its design than to its very limited production run and the fact that it received little marketing at the time.

Precisely for these reasons, it has become a highly desirable piece among collectors of 1970s Herman Miller furniture.
