A rare and lesser-known masterpiece of German postwar design.
Egon Eiermann’s extraordinary E20 wicker lounge chairs, designed in 1957 for the German Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair.
Together with an E10 coffee table.
While most design enthusiasts are familiar with Eiermann’s iconic E10 wicker chair from 1949, its younger sibling, the E20, remains surprisingly unknown and considerably harder to find.
Developed as a refinement of the original E10, the E20 features a more compact, elegantly tapered silhouette, combining sculptural simplicity with remarkable craftsmanship.
The chairs were produced by the traditional German wicker manufacturer Heinrich Murmann, with whom Eiermann collaborated on a number of experimental furniture designs.
What makes these pieces particularly fascinating is that many of Eiermann’s wicker creations were never intended for large-scale commercial production. Instead, they were often manufactured in small quantities for specific architectural projects.
Unlike the famous E10, which has been reissued and remains in production today, the E20 appears to have remained a much rarer chapter in Eiermann’s remarkable design legacy.
A beautiful example of how traditional craftsmanship and natural materials could become part of a radically modern design language.
Understated, architectural and timeless — a wonderful piece of German design history.
