Exceptional and rare three-piece seating group designed by Piero De Martini for Cassina in 1977, consisting of the Viola two-seater sofa, Violino low-back lounge chair and Viola d’Amore high-back lounge chair.
One of the more unusual and expressive seating designs produced by Cassina during the 1970s, the collection combines an almost architectural construction with exceptionally soft and relaxed seating comfort. The distinctive wooden structure is wrapped in black leather and forms the characteristic angular sides of each piece, while generously upholstered loose leather cushions create a striking contrast between the rigid outer construction and the soft, inviting interior. The three models share the same unmistakable design language while having distinctly different proportions. The Viola d’Amore is the narrower and dramatically taller high-back version, creating an almost throne-like silhouette. The Violino is considerably wider and lower, with a generous lounge-chair proportion, while the Viola translates the same construction into a two-seater sofa. Together, the three pieces form an exceptionally sculptural and visually balanced seating group.
Despite its strong architectural appearance, the collection is remarkably comfortable. The deep seating position, generous loose cushions and soft leather create a relaxed sitting experience that contrasts beautifully with the rigorous geometry of the supporting structure.
The original black leather has developed a beautiful character over almost five decades, with the natural softness, folds and subtle patina that make original vintage leather particularly attractive. The set remains in very good vintage condition, with age-appropriate signs of use and wear consistent with its age.
A particularly rare complete ensemble and a wonderful example of the more experimental side of Italian design and Cassina production of the 1970s.
