Majestic and highly aesthetic bronze head in the style of Ife.
Ife is regarded as the spiritual birthplace of the Yoruba people, who live primarily in present-day Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. It is also the origin of some of the greatest achievements in African art and culture, where extraordinary technical skill is combined with profound aesthetic expression.
The delicate elegance of this sculpture is enhanced by the finely incised lines across the face—characteristic of classical Ife portraiture. The rosette on the head symbolizes royal status, identifying the figure as an Ooni (or Oni) – a king or queen.
This piece was cast using the elaborate lost-wax technique (cire perdue), in which a wax model is formed, then melted and lost during the casting process. This means each sculpture is a unique, one-of-a-kind original.
