IDA BAGUS TILEM SOLID SUAR WOOD SCULPTURE CARVING BALI UBUD INDONESIA 1970s

Very abstract and unique Art Deco root wood carving made from Suar wood by the famous Balinese artist Ida Bagus Tilem (1936–1993) from Mas.

These sculptures are carved from a single piece of tree root, preserving the organic shapes and irregularities inherent in the wood. Rather than imposing form onto the material, the artist carefully observes the natural contours and interprets human features within them, allowing the root’s own structure to guide the creative process.

The resulting figures appear fluid and distorted, as if they were wax figures melting in time—evocative of both transformation and decay. Their asymmetry and flowing lines give them a powerful presence: mysterious, mystical, and slightly disturbing. These sculptures invite the viewer to look deeper, uncovering hidden expressions and narratives within their surreal, dreamlike forms.

Ida Bagus Tilem is widely regarded as one of the most influential modern Balinese sculptors. Through his abstract, deeply expressive works and his dedication to teaching, he helped elevate Balinese woodcarving from a traditional craft to a respected form of contemporary art.

Born in Mas, a traditional village south of Ubud in Bali, renowned for its master woodcarvers.

Son of the legendary woodcarver Ida Bagus Nyana, who is credited with pioneering a more expressive and modern style of Balinese carving.

Ida Bagus Tilem expanded on the avant-garde style of his father and other modern Balinese carvers like Tjokot.

He often worked with naturally twisted or knotted pieces of wood, letting the organic form guide the sculpture.

Rather than focusing on classical mythological or decorative motifs, Tilem embraced abstraction and psychological expression, turning wood into a medium for emotion and inner consciousness.

His sculptures show powerful curves, stylized bodies, and sometimes surreal elements—representing a deep departure from traditional aesthetics.

Founded the Njana Tilem Gallery in the 1960s in Mas, and his legacy is preserved today in the Njana Tilem Museum (established in 2018).

Tilem was a dedicated teacher, training over 100 apprentices and emphasizing the expressive potential of wood as an art form—not just a craft.

His teachings and artistic philosophy helped transform Balinese woodcarving into a respected fine art discipline.
